Why is New York called the Big Apple???
Picture from deposit photos.com
In 1924 New York Morning Telegraph Sports Writer J. Fitzgerald a horse racing writer is said to have overheard two stable hands use the term "Big Apple" to describe New Yorks race tracks. The term "Big Apple" was what Trainers and Jockeys used to describe the money prizes to be won at larger tracks. Fitzgerald used the term in his column, and it slowly began to be used to in the Jazz Circuit, where musicians would nick name their home towns in their songs, and that is how the name spread. In 1970 the tourism board officially adopted the Nick Name and in 1997 the mayor named the corner of West 54th and Broadway, where Fitzgerald and his family lived "Big Apple Corner."

Known as the Cross roads of the World, Times Square is the major commercial intersection of Manhattan. In 1904 the New York Times moved it headquarters here , and that is how it got its name.
In 1972 the tradition of New Years Rocking Eve and the dropping of the ball, was started.
Times Square is in many movies and TV shows, and this year it became smoke free!!!
There is plenty to see and do, the world largest Lego store, M&M's store are both here. Get tickets to a Broadway show, visit the Times Square Museum.

John Lennon was one of the founding members of the Beatles. He lived in the Dakota with his family, and was shot and killed on Dec 08 1980 in front of his home.
The Dakota was built in 1880 and completed in 1884 it is located in the Upper West side at the corner of Central Park West and 72nd street, near the Natural History Museum. It started the trend to build luxury apartment buildings on the island.
The building was built for Edward Clark the CEO of Singer Sewing Machines, and was named Dakota for two reasons, the first it was built in an area that was still very wild, and because of Clark's fondness for the wild west.
If you look way up to the top of the 72nd Street entrance you will see a Dakota Indian keeping watch. In 1969 the building became a NY city landmark, in 1972 it became a registered Historic Place, and in 1976 it became a National Historic Landmark.
The Dakota is also where Agent Pendergast from the novels written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child resides, ( my mom's favourite fictional character) Lee Child has also used it in his novels as a main staging point, as well as James Patterson has used it as the primary settings in some of his work. The Dakota can also be seen in lots of famous movies, both as backdrop and setting.
